DIY Fume Extractor – Efficient Design for Makers and Tinkerers

This DIY fume extractor is designed to handle fumes and smoke from soldering and other small-scale projects. While it’s not the most compact unit, its optimized design ensures efficient airflow and effective filtration, making it a reliable tool for your workspace. Most importantly, it's nice-looking.

I designed it so that only the power cable is visible and you can wrap it around the fan if you want to store it away

Features:

  • Optimized Airflow Design: Tapered intake and exhaust cones minimize turbulence and improve airflow efficiency.
  • Easy Assembly: Built with standard, readily available components and straightforward assembly.
  • Customizable Filtration: Includes space for an activated carbon filter for added effectiveness.

Design Insights:

The intake and exhaust cones have been carefully tapered to create smoother airflow and reduce backpressure. This improves the performance of the 120mm fan, making it more efficient at pulling fumes through the filter without unnecessary strain. These optimizations result in a more effective extractor aka pulling the fumes from further away compared to the usual fan.

What You’ll Need:

  • 1x 120mm PC Fan
  • 4x M4 Bolts (for putting everything together).
  • Heat-Set Inserts
  • Activated Carbon Filter
  • Switch (for easy on/off control).
  • USB-C PD Male Adapter Board (for modern, versatile power input).
