Trilobite

Trilobites were marine arthropods that existed over 520 million years ago. They are easily recognized by their distinctive three-lobed, three-segmented form. These fascinating creatures dominated the seas during the Cambrian period, and although they became less abundant in succeeding geologic periods, some forms persisted into the Permian Period, which ended 251.9 million years ago.

Trilobites had a hard exoskeleton made of chitin, which they shed as they grew. These shed exoskeletons are what we find as fossils today. They were incredibly diverse, with some burrowing in sediment, others crawling on the seafloor, and some even swimming in open water. Their diets varied too, with some feeding on detritus, others scavenging, and some were even predators.

Trilobites are important to paleontologists as they serve as index fossils, helping to date the layers of rock in which they are found. They provide valuable insights into the evolution of life on Earth and the ancient environments they inhabited.
