This hollow orca whale model measures 324 mm long. It's cut into two pieces, with pin joins between each side. I used a 3d pen to insert a bit of filament in the cut to give it strength. When printing, I used BVOH water soluable filament for the supports, then washed out the supports after printing. This was required to get translucent flippers and tail, where I couldn't get my hands in to break off supports manually.
I also tried PVA, but it was a miserable failure and failed mid-print. Do not recommend.
Model was printed on a Prusa XL with 5 toolheads, only 3 were needed.
Filaments:
Overture translucent blue petg
Overture translucent clear petg
Fiberology BVOH
To make it glow I used a led strip powered by a usb battery bank which I carried in my pocket. The whole sculpture was lifted on a pole when marching in the parade.
Lessons learned for next year's parade - start earlier! I thought a month was enough time to get this printed, but I had so many failures with the PVA that I ended up finishing it the day before the parade. Next year I'll start work in August.
