UPDATE: 5/28/25.  Added pictures.  It was so big had to take it outside.

UPDATE:  5/10/25.  I have completed printing the entire model and the tolerances are good.  In the process I have made a second design of the music tray with diamond cutouts instead of x braces.  If printed upright these will require litte to no support.  I still have a few details to work out with the hardware.

A friend of mine made a music stand in wood shop in high school.  We were both in the high school marching band.  I talked to him recently and I decided to make a 3D printable music stand based on his design.  This is the only full size 3D printable music stand that I could find so I guess this is a first.  The stand is adjustable from about 27 inches to about 54 inches in height.  The music tray is adjustable 90 degrees in 6, 15 degree increments.

I have made the sizes of the models so this can be printed on smaller printers such as an Ender 3.  If you have a newer printer such as an Ender 3 V3 Plus you can print all the parts a lot faster.  All models were created using FreeCAD.  The models are not arranged in any specific orientation.  Use good jugement or something like the Cura auto orientation plugin or Orcaslicer auto orient button.

This is a large project and it will take 3 ½ rolls of 1 kg filament to print.  I recommend using PLA Plus, or any other filament, but I would not use regular PLA.  I recommend printing with 3 walls and 25 percent adaptive cubic infill.

Assembly is from the bottom to the top.  I have made a hardware list and included it in the files.  Some parts will need to be glued together.  I suggest SCIGRIP 16 for the glue.  Superglue and epoxy for plastic are also good choces.

Assembly Steps:

  1. insert the legs into the bottom of the main pole piece.  Place the bottom holdown onto the bottom and insert 4 screws (Countersunk #10 x 1.5 inches) to hold the legs in place.
  2. Assemble the main pole sections together.  These will need to be glued and there are 3D printable dowels to line everything up.
  3. Attach the collar to the top of the main pole with #10 x 1.5 inch or 1 inch screw.  Install the insert into the collar with #6 x ¾ inch screws.  Assemble the thumb screw.  The thumb screw for the collar goes together with a 3/8 by 2 inch carriage bolt and nut.  Use some threadlocker and tighten with needle nose pliers.
  4. Assemble the upper pole sections.  These will go together with a 25 inch 3/8 allthread and there are 3D printable alignment keys for each section.  The sections can also be glued together, but the allthread will be used to attach the music tray mount.  insert the upper pole into the lower pole and screw in the thumb screw all the way to hold it in place.
  5. Attach the lower mount to the allthread from the upper pole section.  There is a 3D printed spacer to go between the top of the pole and the lower mount.
  6. Attach the music stand adapter to the upper mount.
  7. Attach the upper mount to the lower mount through the pivot point hole (top hole).  I suggest using a piece of the allthread.  There is also a 3D printed spacer for this part.  Make sure the upper mount adapter faces towards the front of the stand.  Put a quick release pin into the angle adjustment holes to keep it in place.
  8. The music tray has tongue and groove joints and to keep the music tray shelf aligned, there are some small dowels.  Assemble the music tray with glue (complete this ahead of time and give the glue time to cure) and attach it to the upper mount.

Break out your instrument and practice!  Enjoy!
