These models can be interconnected and stacked to show how nucleotides come together into strands of DNA. There are several educational details here:
- The nucleotides only pair with their correct complements (C to G, A to T)
- Each matching nucleotide pair has linkages that correspond to the number of hydrogen bonds available for base pairing (three for C/G, two for A/T)
- When stacked, the double helix twists by approximately 36° per base pair, just like B-form DNA
Almost as importantly, you can fit a Dove Promises chocolate in the hexagonal nucleobase, and hide a bunch of nucleotides for a pseudoeducational treasure hunt.
Printing Notes
No supports are required, use the default orientation. It's probably best to print with three or four shells for the vertical perimeters. Use a different color for each type of nucleotide if possible.
