I started braiding bracelets using commercial strings but I wanted to cut my own ones. Using a simple cutter and thumb is possible but it needs practice. The tool is available in a heavy and expensive version for professionals; this version fits my needs.
The model has 5 parts (see the assembly view) and uses M4 bolts and nuts inserted after printing:
- the Guide (red) which defines the width of the string and holds a M4 nut. The original file is for a 2 mm string. I added the 1 mm version.
- a body Lower part (light green) holds a M4 nut.
- a body Upper part (dark green) which holds the guide. Bolt A drives the guide.
- the Ring locks/releases the Guide and the Upper parts by sliding the Lower part using bolt ‘B’: . The 2 cavities ‘C’ on the sides of the ring can be used to lock it to the upper body, but are not necessary.
- the Cutter Holder: for a 9 mm width cutter (yellow) or a Stanley cutter (orange). It's attached to the Upper body, with 2 bolts and 2 nuts. The Cutter holder is fixed in a vice; mine is portable and allows to rotate in all directions which eases the use of the tool.
As is, I use it to cut strings or cores from 1 mm to 15 mm. By modifying the Guide or removing it - simply using the Ring as a guide - one can go to up to 40 mm.
Chronology for assembling (left and right refer to the assembly picture):
- Assemble bolt A with the 2 visible nuts (see photo). As no space is available for locking washer, I use hyperglue to lock it.
- Insert a nut in the Guide
- From right, insert the Guide to the Upper body.
- Insert a nut in the Lower body
- Upper and Lower parts being aligned on the right side, insert it to the Ring. Turning the B bolt will lock the 4 parts.
- Insert the D nuts in the Upper body
- Attach the Cutter holder to the Upper body with 2 bolts. Before locking it, insert the cutter. Lock bolts D.
- Your tool is ready to go to your vice.
- To adapt the width, release the Lower body with bolt B.
- Turn bolt A CW to increase the string width, CCW to decrease it.
- Relock with bolt B.
!! Additional parts allowing to cut at 45 deg angle and a safety guard for the cutter.
