This kinetic architectural model is inspired by the movement of a human hand, designed to respond dynamically to temperature changes. The structure expands in colder temperatures and contracts when it’s hot, creating an adaptive canopy that provides shade when needed. This mechanism allows the model to function as a climate-responsive architectural element, demonstrating the potential for self-adjusting structures in real-world applications.
The model’s framework features a Voronoi pattern, representing veins and arteries within the human hand and fingers. This organic lattice structure not only enhances the visual appeal but also optimizes material efficiency, reducing weight while maintaining strength. The model is printed in PLA and reinforced with 1.5mm³ copper wire, allowing flexibility for movement. Additional metal components can be integrated to improve durability and precision.
By blending biomimetic design with environmental responsiveness, this project explores the future of climate-adaptive architecture. The self-adjusting canopy concept demonstrates how passive environmental response mechanisms can reduce energy consumption while improving comfort and functionality.
