I needed a chalk holder, and originally it was on a very odd part of the kitchen wall, and I sized accordingly. Now it's still functional, but sits on the counter.
Because I never actually measure anything, the holes are made to put a screw in the on on the right, then futz and get it level with the hole on the left.
It hold full size sticks of chalk. My family however is unable to, and inevitably all chalk is broken into nubby little fragments after one use. I once had the delusion that white chalk would be on one shelf, and colored on the other. You can see how that went.
