Pine Processionary caterpillars are a menace to us and our animals, from January to March they will go down the pine trees to get into the dirt near the tree just to emerge as a moth a few months later.
The idea is to catch them into a bag with a shovel of dirt from near the tree. To do this we need to trick them into believing they are going into te ground.
The trap, you can find online, is composed of a long plastic sheet with a sponge glued at the bottom to seal any exits along the pine bark cracks, then a few tubes, 30mm wide or so, from that sponge to a bag with some dirt placed close to the trap it self.
The problem is that a simple tube intersecting the sponge ring is not enough to invite the caterpillars to go down so this funnel creates a slope they cant jump making them go down into the bag.

Needless to say that these traps should/must be installed before the caterpillars start comming down so it must be in November/December and never do it when they are present because they are always releasing very tiny hairs that can cause serious allergic reactions.
