Remix of Whity's great filament clip, to hold tighter to the spool, and to make filament easier to insert and remove.

Update: I uploaded a low-profile version of this clip. It is about 11.2 mm tall, compared to 15 mm for the original. This should help when using the clip with new or almost new spools that need to turn in filament dryers.

****

We must keep making filament clips until someone gets it right!

This clip should be printed in PETG, or in some other material that will spring back (close) to its original shape after deforming under load. PLA does not do that well.

This clip follow's Whity's example, with a clip that fits entirely on the inside of the spool, and does not attach to the edges.

Whity's filament clip is almost perfect. I only had a couple of problems with it. First, it loses its spring over time, and it doesn't hold tightly to the spool after a while. Second, I found it challenging to attach filament to it, and to take the filament off.

This remix is an effort to fix these problems. Here is what I did.

  1. I made it a bit bigger. With the plastic thicker, the whole thing is a bit stiffer, which helps it stay springy, even after a while under load. This also lets the clip compress a bit more to fit inside the boundaries of the spool. All of this helps it stick to the spool better.

  2. I unwound the “S” shape a bit, so it is more open. This also lets it compress more and hold to the spool more tightly.

  3. I replaced the part that holds the filament with a different style that has some teeth and more grip. But it still releases pretty easily.
