A simple beer coaster I designed for a night of drinks. It also served as a fun introduction to two-colour printing.

I’ve created a few custom coaster designs for an upcoming drinking night and to also give them away as gifts. I thought it would be fun to share the results here. This particular one is inspired by Guinness and was also my first experiment with multi-colour printing.

The concept is simple: use a darker filament for the base to represent the beer, then switch to white for the top layer to mimic the foam. The logo is embossed, allowing the beer-coloured filament to show through for a nice visual effect.

The coaster measures 9 cm in diameter and 5 mm in height—just the right size for a drink without being bulky.

I printed this on an Ender 3 V3 SE using Cura’s Filament Change post-processing script, set to trigger at layer 21. I was able to fit and print four coasters at once on my 220 × 220 mm build plate.

Check out my matching coaster holder, designed to complement these coasters and hold up to 5 of them perfectly.

Update – Improved Coaster Design!

With another party coming up, I wanted to revisit the coaster design. I wasn’t fully happy with the previous version. The colour wasn’t quite right, the finish could be better, and overall, it felt like it was missing something.

What’s Changed:

Text and logo are now extruded 2mm (previously 1mm) for better visibility and feel.

Added a ring around the inner ring, chamfered by 0.75mm.

Switched to a different top colour that I think fits the theme better.

Tuned my ironing settings to improve the top surface finish.

Colour Change Instructions:

The same colour swap applies here as with the holder:
If you're using a multi-colour printer, set a manual or slicer-triggered colon change at layer 15 for the top colour.

Print Settings I Used:

  • Cura Dynamic 0.16 profile
  • Ironing on (zig-zag)
  • Monotonic top/bottom order enabled

I’ve kept the original coaster files too, in case anyone prefers that style.
