This DIY scissorslift model can be a great intro into engineering principles for elementary and middle schoolers (K1-K6). Besides the 3d printed parts, you need two syringes, two bamboo skewers, 8-10 inches of silicone/aquarium tubing, a few toothpicks, hot glue sticks, and a handful of craft sticks.

To assemble the parts, cut a hot glue stick into 4-5mm sections to use as stoppers at the end of toothpicks. Drill the craftsticks at both ends and the middle using a ~3mm drill bit (toothpicks must fit in the hole with little play). See the PDF for step by step instructions.
