My son and I found the intermeshing rotor mechanism of the Kaman K-Max very intriguing. I couldn't find a 3D model which implemented the actual mechanism of the intermeshing blades so I created this one. This is loosely based on a more realistic 3D model I found but with some of the more fragile parts either thickened or eliminated to make it a more robust toy. Additionally, it's designed in such a way that it can be printed easily without supports.
M3 bolts are used to assemble:
- 2x 12-16mm bolts for blades
- 2-6 washers for blades
- 1x countersunk 4-8mm bolt for stabilizer fins
Note that the model is designed such that 1-2 washers should be placed in between each rotor and the body of the helicopter. Without washers, the gears will mesh too tightly and the blades won't rotate well. An additional washer can be used between the top of the blade and the head of the bolt to further reduce friction.
Printed without supports in PETG. PLA should work just fine as well.
There are two different sets of blades, the normal blades and “fat” blades. The fat blades are more robust, more difficult for kids to bend or break for example.
