I built this very cheap "DAC" using a very cheap mp3 player I had laying around, together with a 6j1 preamplifier I also didn't use.

Needed parts:

  • MP3 audio module (usually sold for less than 2 usd)
  • RCA female connectors
  • 9V Power supply
  • Optional: antenna
  • Optional: 6J1 preamp (fits nicely on top)

It's definitely and by all means NOT HI-FI, but it does work OK for general usage.

I included the original design files, to be used from FreeCAD.

About the connections, it's pretty standard. The mp3 module requires from 7 to 12 volts to operate, supply that, and connect the audio cables to the female RCA. Optionally, connect the antenna. There are no complex schematics.

Add filters if you are going to use a switching power supply, or simply make sure you use a good, regulated PSU to reduce the background noise. The module internally uses a 78M05 regulator, so make sure the input voltage is above 7V.
