Bernie Sanders Meme
Play Bernie's Inaugural Hustle (Help Bernie Get to the Inauguration, sell mittons, and enact policy)
Of the many memes featuring US Senator Bernie Sanders, the most famous is the "mittens" meme.
This meme originated from a photograph taken at the inauguration of Joe Biden on January 20, 2021. In the photo, Sanders is seen sitting on a folding chair, socially distanced from other attendees, wearing a distinctive pair of large, fluffy mittens. The image quickly went viral, with people editing Sanders into a wide variety of humorous and historical contexts.
The meme's popularity led to increased visibility for Sanders and a huge demand for the mittens, which were made by a Vermont elementary school teacher. Sanders capitalized on the meme's popularity by selling merchandise featuring the image to raise money for charity, ultimately raising over $1.8 million.
Another popular meme features Sanders from a campaign video with the caption "I am once again asking for your financial support." This meme is often used to humorously request something.
