After seeing ESPHome Cartridge Player, I thought I should finally get around to my own project (which has been languishing for 10 years on the to-do list)…

My design revolves around having a giant stack of credit-card sized NFC cards, and the TurboGrafx-16 slot form factor.

The slot is pretty much cosmetic, as cards will scan when left on-top of the device, but it's still fun. About half of the card is still visible when slotted, thus allowing for printed adhesive labels to be visible.

Instructions

  1. Print all four parts: case-bottom, case-top, tray, clamp.
    • All STLs are pre-aligned for printing.
  2. (Optionally) Insert the clamp into the slot on the case-top.
    • This provides a little bit of friction to hold the NFC card.
  3. Insert the ESP32 PCB into the rear slot of case-bottom and hot-glue it in-place.
  4. (Optionally) hot-glue a bunch of weights into case-bottom, for a bit of heft.
  5. Attach the PN532 PCB to case-bottom.
  6. Insert the tray.
  7. Slot in case-top, making sure no cables are in the way.
  8. Apply pressure to case-top and case-bottom, and screw them together.
  9. (Optionally) apply rubber feet.
