The Andrea Doria: An Icon of Maritime History and a Tragic Tale
The Andrea Doria was one of the most famous ocean liners in history, launched in 1951 by the Italian shipping company Italian Line. With its elegant and innovative design, it became a symbol of luxury and modernity, offering transatlantic voyages between Italy and the United States. The ship, over 200 meters long with a capacity of 1,200 passengers, is also remembered for its beauty and impeccable service on board.
Sadly, its name is linked to a tragic event. On July 25, 1956, the Andrea Doria collided with the Swedish ocean liner MS Stockholm off the coast of Nantucket, USA, due to a collision in reduced visibility. The incident resulted in the deaths of 46 people, but the majority of the passengers and crew survived, thanks to a swift evacuation.
The Andrea Doria, severely damaged in the hull, sank the following day after a failed rescue attempt. Despite the damage, the ship became an icon in maritime history, symbolizing one of the greatest maritime tragedies of the 20th century. Its sinking marked the end of an era, but the memory of its elegance and allure remains etched in collective memory.
3D printing settings
🔧 3D Printing Settings for the Andrea Doria Model
Here are the recommended settings for 3D printing each part of the Andrea Doria, depending on the material you choose. Ensure precision and durability by following these guidelines!
- PLA (Polylactic Acid) – Easy and Affordable Layer Height: 0.1–0.2 mm (fine detail recommended for smaller parts). Infill: 20–30% (higher infill for structural components like the hull). Print Speed: 50–60 mm/s. Nozzle Temperature: 200–220°C. Bed Temperature: 50–60°C. Adhesion: Use a brim or raft to prevent warping on larger parts.
- ABS (Acrylonitrile Butadiene Styrene) – Durable and Heat-Resistant Layer Height: 0.1–0.2 mm. Infill: 25–40% for stronger structural parts. Print Speed: 40–50 mm/s (slightly slower to avoid warping). Nozzle Temperature: 220–240°C. Bed Temperature: 90–110°C. Adhesion: Enclosure recommended to maintain temperature and reduce warping.
- PETG (Polyethylene Terephthalate Glycol) – Strong and Flexible Layer Height: 0.1–0.2 mm. Infill: 20–30%. Print Speed: 40–60 mm/s. Nozzle Temperature: 230–250°C. Bed Temperature: 70–80°C. Adhesion: Use a glue stick or textured PEI sheet for better grip.
- Resin (SLA/DLP) – Ultra-Fine Details Layer Height: 0.025–0.05 mm. Exposure Time: Follow resin manufacturer recommendations (typically 8–15 seconds per layer). Support Density: 70–80% for delicate parts like railings and lifeboats. Post-Processing: Wash in isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and cure under UV light for added strength. Additional Tips: Supports: Use supports for overhangs >45°. Consider tree supports for delicate sections like masts and railings. Adhesion: Ensure good bed leveling and adhesion, especially for large parts like the hull. Assembly: Print smaller parts like lifeboats, masts, and railings separately for better detail. 🔔 Ready to bring the Andrea Doria to life? Download the files and start printing today!
- ABS (Acrilonitrile Butadiene Stirene) – Resistente e Durevole Altezza Strato: 0,1–0,2 mm.
- PETG (Polietilene Tereftalato Glicol) – Robusto e Flessibile Altezza Strato: 0,1–0,2 mm. Infill: 20–30%. Velocità di Stampa: 40–60 mm/s. Temperatura Ugello: 230–250°C. Temperatura Piatto: 70–80°C.
- Resina (SLA/DLP) – Dettagli Ultra Fini Altezza Strato: 0,025–0,05 mm. 🔔 Pronto a dare vita all’Andrea Doria?
