Did you wish your favourite planter was self-watering? This simple 3D-printed insert can make that a reality. Just follow these steps:
- Measure and Scale: Measure the internal dimensions of your planter. Scale the riser to your desired height (water level) and diameter. Scale the top grate to get a snug fit, tight enough to prevent soil from falling into the reservoir.
- Print: 3D print the parts in your desired material. I used PETG for durability.
- Assemble and Plant: Insert the conversion kit, fill the reservoir with water, and place your plant and soil.
- Water: Water your plant from the top until its roots extend into the reservoir. From then on, simply refill the reservoir through the tube whenever it gets low.
It's that simple! This kit was originally designed for growing basil, and the plant thrived throughout the entire winter, proving the design works beautifully.
