Remix to make a custom label cap that fits into he gridfinity bottle.
I use these bottles to store some spices. With my handwriting there's no way to make sense of what's in which bottle. So, I made this customizeable bottle cap remix, that allows me to neatly print out the proper caps on each bottle.
Printing
This prints upside down on the build plate, for clean finish, without supports. Use 0.2 layer height, I have dozens printed out in PETG. Works flawlessly.
Usage
- Put both files ("empty_cap.stl" and “gridfinity_bottle_label_cap.scad”) in the same folder
- Open the .scad file in OpenSCAD
- Select “invert” (make sure it's set to “true”)
- Edit the texts, set empty lines to empty strings (use double quotes ("") - do not comment out empty lines!)
- Render and save STL (F6, then F7) as file number 1 (=some_proper_filename1.stl)
- Deselect “invert” (make sure it's set to “false”)
- Render and save STL again (F6, then F7) as file number 2 (=some_proper_filename2.stl)
- Find both files and drag&drop them BOTH AT THE SAME TIME to Prusa Slicer
- Prusa Slicer prompts to ask if this is a multi part object - select: YES
- Select filament color for the parts, or paint individual letters using Prusa Slicer's “Smart fill” tool
- Slice & print!
Settings
- text size: use size 6 to preserve the dots on i, ä, ö, and so on. Alternatively, for smaller font sizes use CAPITAL LETTERS, this should work for English at least.
- text depth: 0.4 is used to get 2 layers of colored text. This is to reduce unnecessary color changes. This results in two color changes only (cap color layer 1 → change one to text color layer 1 and 2 → change two back to cap color from layer 2 onwards). Using more text depth than 2 layers will result in more color changes, so best leave it at 0.4. If you use different layer height than 0.2, then you probably should adjust this accordingly, to get two layers of color.
How do I do one of those yellow caps (3-color print)?
- Make the cap STL files as normal in OpenSCAD, and import those to the slicer
- Select yellow as the cap color, black as the text color
- Paint white color with height range tool, from very low down all the way up
- Slice and make sure only a few bottom layers remain yellow
- Print!
Other methods probably exist where you can paint outlines, shapes and whatnot with different color. Let me know your tips on how to make these look very nice!
Future plans for model
- Find another cap or make my own cap, so I can use more permissive license. If you know of one, let me know.
