When re-keying a lock the cylinder cap must be removed by depressing the retaining pin while turning the cap. The tool provided by cheaper re-key kits to do this is awkward to the point of unusable. Meanwhile, the “official” tool costs any where from $10 - $60 depending on how much the seller price gouges DIY-ers.

This is a 3D printable reimagining of the tool. (Designed for Schlege-type cylinders

NOTE: The “crown” for compressing the retaining pin is inherently weak, That's why this is only 10mm tall, (<0.5") compared to the Official tool which is much longer. When using this tool care should be taken to use it mostly for pressing the retaining pin, while applying the torque to the cap itself.

Usage:

  1. Print the tool in a sturdy material such as PETG or ABS.
  2. Insert the tool into the end of the cylinder so that the teeth engage the retaining pin.
  3. Apply inward pressure to the tool, while Twisting the cap itself. Remember, the teeth are somewhat fragile, and may break if excessive torque is applied to the pins. (Consider applying some lubricant to the cylinder, e.g. WD40, to ease removal of the cap).
