It is common to learn CNC milling basics by using the mill to draw on a sheet of paper. The marker should be spring loaded in order to avoid crushing the tip.
This part uses a Crayola marker and fits inside of a 7/8" collet. A spring is used to apply light downward pressure to the marker so it can effectively write within a wide range of Z heights and avoid damage to the marker and machine.
The adapter is designed to fit a spring with an OD between 18 and 20mm, compressed length of approximately 6mm, and uncompressed length of 25+mm. McMaster Carr part 1692K953 looks to be a good match but I have not tested it with that specific spring.
The part can be printed without supports and a brim is recommended. I printed with a layer height of 0.2mm and 0.3mm and both came out great!
