Edit 2025/10/26: This model is a usable prototype that proves feasibility of the idea. An improved, more flexible and convenient version can be found here: https://www.printables.com/model/1459341-parametric-lock-collet-for-telescopic-rod-v2
This is a collet to lock a telescopic rod made of two tubes (e.g. aluminium or PVC) of such diameters that one fits snugly in the other. The attached STLs are for a pair of 12mm+10mm tubes and a pair of 10mm+8mm tubes.
Some uses of a telescopic rod in a workshop:
- fixing rod for a bike maintenance stand, to keep the handlebar and front wheel from moving during work
- pinch rods for woodworking, to check squareness of a box or drawer glue-up (diagonals are the same length) or to measure inner dimensions of places awkward to reach with a tape measure
This is a work in progress. The collet needs to be a relatively precise fit for the tubes, so it pretty much has to be generated for your material. The “wings” that tighten around the tubes are quite delicate, too, until the collet is assembled and tubes are in place.
