Lesson plan and activity:

All coins must be made from an initial revolve resulting in a coin that is 6cm in diameter and 1.25cm in thickness.

  • Exceptions can be made if justified and approved
  • Must not require ANY supports (no supports).
  • Should be gear-esque in nature.
  • Must slope downwards towards the center in some fashion.
  • Must incorporate EITHER multi-color technology OR print-in-place movable parts

Design Choices:

I originally designed it to be very simple, with 3 side iterations. I wanted a few holes, a few raised spots, and the sharp corners.

It started with a very simple coin, with not many curves and corners.

I decided to fillet around the edges to create more curve, contrast, and easier printability.

It seemed like something was missing within the center, so I decided to add a circle going around the center, along with curves and edges.

But I wanted the center circle to be a different color from the rest of the shape, so I had to make it a separate body. Instead of making it a circle attached, I had to make brand new bodies that go through the shape itself, but don’t connect.

Then, I circular patterned it so that it went all the way around the shape.

However, the end ‘corners’ seemed too sharp and boring. So, I added domes going around the entire thing.

The outer raised parts were too dull as well, so I separated all of them into two parts.

And it was done.
