Mock up for ER40 collet chuck for lathe. DO NOT RUN A PLASTIC CHUCK ON A LATHE. This is for testing dimensions before committing the design to metal.
Collets are great for holding cylindrical stock. ER40 size is a good match for my 9x20 lathe. Inexpensive collet sets are available but you need a method to attach the collet to the lathe. Turning your own collet chuck is probably the most precise and inexpensive method. But this is a time and metal consuming operation so it's worth testing the design with a 3D print.

Notes:
This is just a mock up so I printed with medium resolution. This is good enough for the relatively large spindle threads.
Again, a 3D print of this design is not intended for spinning or actual work holding with a lathe.
Photos show square collet block next to 3D print. Other photo shows a hex block that I bored and threaded to mount to a lathe. I had some work holding problems and this ended up with about 10 thou of runout.
Post-Printing
Lathe work
Once you are satisfied with the plastic prototype, you will need to use the lathe to implement the design in metal. I use the same design and use the F360 manufacturing tab to generate g-code so my lathe can cut the chuck. Basically, drill, bore, and thread the spindle end while holding the stock in a 3 jaw chuck then thread the stock onto the spindle and bore, taper, thread the ER40 side. This ensures the chuck is concentric to the lathe.
How I Designed This
Fusion 360 Design
Simple to design in F360. A collet chuck is just a couple cylinders with 1 1/2" 8 TPI spindle internal threads on one end and a M50x1.5 external threads and a ER40 taper on the other end.
STL output using high resolution and the threads are modeled.
F360 file attached so spindle end can be modified for other spindles.
