About this model

This model was designed in FreeCAD - FOSS (Free and Open-Source Software) 3D parametric modeler. Source file is available.

This is a parametric (means you can adjust some aspects of it) cylinder container with a screw cap. The defining trait of its design are the ribs on the body and the cap. It features smooth internal volume (no steps in front of the cap) so you can easily reach the contents.

About example parts

Here is how you can read example files' names:

  • ParametricCylinderRibs_<Diameter>x<Height>_A - bottom part

  • ParametricCylinderRibs_<Diameter>x<Height>_B - top part

ParametricCylinderRibs_30x120_A -> Diameter 30mm, Height 120mm, bottom part

Adjusting parameters

In the source file of this model you will find 4 elements: variable set "Vars" and 3 parts "Draft", "Bottom" and "Top". You should find editable parameters in the variable set.

You can adjust the following parameters of the model:

  1. Inner diameter - inner diameter of the model;

  2. Inner fillet - inner fillet of the model;

  3. Inner height - inner height of the model;

  4. Shell bottom - thickness of the bottom shell (wall);

  5. Shell side - thickness of the side shell (wall);

  6. Thread copies - number of threads;

  7. Thread length - length of the thread;

  8. Thread pitch - how "steep" the thread is;

  9. Thread top offset - offset from top edge of the model to the top edge of the thread;

  10. Tolerance - additional space between two halves of the model in the thread section;

I recommend setting the "Shell side" as 1.2 and "Shell bottom" as 1.4 (as in side with additional layer of 0.2). For larger diameters (> 100mm) I recommend increasing "Shell bottom" since the bottom side is going to be less sturdy than sides.

On the following image is illustrated the "Tolerance" parameter as the thin yellow line between dark grey "Top" and light grey "Bottom" parts. It is only applied to "Top" part.

Export parts

Then you are done adjusting the parameters of the model, you should export both parts. Select "Bottom", go to File... -> Export... or press CTRL+E. Export pop-up window should appear. Select file type (3mf is recommended) and click Save. Repeat this for "Top".

By default files should be in the directory where the source file is.

Now the model is ready to be sliced and printed.

Recommended print settings

You should print both parts on their flat side. Use filaments like ABS or PETG. With PLA and with small diameter the threads section might be prone to snapping off. Layer adhesion is very important.

0.2 mm layer height, 5 perimeters and 5 top/bottom layers to avoid infill, concentric bottom infill for good looks.

If your parts came out too tight - try to forcefully, but slowly, repeatedly screw and unscrew them. This will loosen them up.
