The Douglas DC-8 was one of the first successful jet-powered airliners and played an important role in the early jet age. It first flew in 1958 and was designed to compete with the Boeing 707. The DC-8 could carry many passengers over long distances and was known for its strong, reliable construction. Over the years, several versions were built, including cargo models, and some DC-8 aircraft are still used today as freighters.
