I seem to always have my one hand occupied when needing to swap a bit (and fiddling around with one hand is very distracting), so I made this model to easily swap my bits without much effort.

This bitholder is made to be space efficient and therefor uses little material and small magnets. For the swapping to work you therefor need to meet 2 criteria:

  • the magnetic holding force of the screwdriver needs to be weaker than the one from the used magnets, or else the bits won't come off the screwdriver

  • the weight of the whole bitswapper needs to be high enough so the crewdriver won't lift off the whole thing (that's why the spare bits are stored in there and the tower piece is connected, 75g worked for me)

There are 2 versions of the screwdriver holder and the bit holder. I printed the screwIn bitholder with the noInsert screwdriver_holder out of elegoo PLA marble with 2 Walls (outer-inner) and 15% infill.

If you are confident in your printer the pressFit version is going to save you some screws (works on a decently well calibrated trident). The screwIn version should work on any printer with any filament and provides a slightly better holding force. When assebling the screw in version be sure to go from left to right and test with a magnet before going to the next. I might design a clipping version in the future which would require no screws or heated inserts.

The base should be out of something not to stiff and brittle and grippy if possible (if the whole thing is sliding around, a twisting motion instead of pulling will do the job)

If you want to remodel the screwdriver_holder part to fit your needs make sure to place the hole (for insert or directly into the plastic) 44.9mm above the bottom face.

There a slits on the front for paper- or printed labels (the slots are 1x5.2x17mm in size; you can use a primitve in orca and engrave it, a color coding works as well)

Everything is designed to be printed with no supports (see reference picture in orca slicer for print orientation)

BOM:

  • 2mm allen key (length >50mm, usually comming with printers)

  • 5x 6x3mm Magnets

  • 1x M3x4 FHCS (ferrous material)

  • 4x M3x2 FHCS (ferrous material, for screwIn-version only)

  • 1x M3x3x5 heated Insert (for Insert-version only)
