Julio Nieto’s "La Pescadora"
located in the historic harbor of Puerto de la Cruz on Tenerife, Canary Islands. Created by renowned artist Julio Nieto in 2008, the statue has become an iconic symbol of the island's maritime heritage.
Captured in Motion Unlike traditional, static monuments, Nieto’s La Pescadora is famous for its explosive energy. The sculpture captures a young woman in a desperate rush, striding from the harbor into the town.
The Narrative: She is depicted mid-shout, calling out to potential customers to sell her catch before it spoils.
The Details: She balances a heavy woven basket on her head with her left hand, while her right hand grips a bucket. In a feat of incredible sculpting, the fish in the bucket appear to be still alive and jumping, frozen in bronze (and now digital mesh) just as they splash upward.
Restoration and Return The statue is so beloved by the locals that when it was removed for necessary renovations in 2020, its absence was deeply felt in the community. It was restored to its rightful home in front of Playa del Muelle in December 2020, where it continues to stand as a tribute to the strength and vitality of the Canarian fishmongers.
