First reference I found was Betzuka for the idea to use a generic laser line and a generic USB webcam CCD sensor to do some trick laser levelling.https://github.com/betzuka/laserlevel
Bryan Howard (https://github.com/bhowiebkr/laser-level-webcam) then improved this with Python code that runs on Windows 10/11.
What I have made is a mount for the camera module, with a screw fine adjust, that mounts directly to my AvidCNC (or any aluminium) gantry leg. I had a left over 50mm MGN9 rail and carriage (same as Tap part for Voron 2.4) so I used it.
The webcam I used was a generic IMX179

With Bryan's python code, you can really measure how level your CNC machine is to fractions of a mm over the entire length of the machine.
This is also ALOT cheaper than commercial solutions, and absolutely fine for us amateurs.
Thanks Bryan for the python code !
