My wife asked if I could print a checkbook cover. I searched for models online and they were all too bulky for her. She just wanted a simple cover like the banks used to give you. Based on information I had read about using different filaments for support, I cam up with this idea. Please read the printing instructions carefully.

  • 0.2mm layer height

  • 4 walls

  • Infill is unimportant was this does not use any.

PLA and TPU do not stick to each other very well so I used PLA to act as a spacer/support for the TPU to make the pockets in the cover. I was able to print this without an AMS on my P1S. I had to tell Bambu Studio I was using two different colors of TPU  when actually I was using TPU for the cover and PLA for the spacer to make the pocket. This is so it would move to the prime tower to purge for a “color change”. At that time I would pause the print and swap the filaments. This happens on layers #3 and #5.

I set the print temperature to 230C for the TPU which is within the working range of PLA.

Printing sequence for non AMS:

  1. Load TPU on the machine for the cover and start the print.

  2. Monitor the print progress because early on layer #3 after printing the outside boarders the head will move to the prime tower to start purging prior to “color change”.

  3. Once it moves to the prime tower on layer #3, press ‘PAUSE’.

  4. UNLOAD the TPU and LOAD the PLA.

  5. Press RESUME

  6. At layer #5 when the head moves back to the prime tower press PAUSE again and swap back to the TPU filament.

  7. Press RESUME and allow it to finish printing.

  8. See the description for instructions to remove the PLA spacers.

Post print “assembly”:

After printing this is what you will have. (NOTE: This picture is of an early prototype before I added the cuts to hold the register pages and for the blocking flap for carbon copy checks.)

Items needed:

  • 2" - 3" putty knife

  • Printed cover

Start separating the PLA filler from the TPU cover by carefully getting the putty knife between the two materials. Once you get it started it should separate easily.

Continue working the putty knife between the materials being careful not to tear through the cover at the edges.

Once you have the top side separated repeat on the back side.

Now carefully remove the PLA spacer once it has been freed from the TPU cover on both sides.

Repeat for the other half of the checkbook cover.

Install you checks and register and enjoy!
