This is a drilling depth stop with a basket rotating on a thrust bearing, thanks to which it leaves no trace on the wood's surface. The basket has large openings, so the chips don't clog the drill bit's flutes.

I've first seen this design as a product by Taytools on YouTube channel "Wood by Wright" (though Taytools doesn't seem to sell them anymore).

NOTE: The thrust bearing is an important part of this design. Any friction between the basket and its collar makes the basket follow the drill's rotation, thus sliding on the wood surface and leaving circular markings. The bearing-less design didn't work well.

For drilling holes that simply don't go past the board's thickness it's enough to offer the drill with the depth stop to the board, but if you need to drill to a specific depth, a small helper that gives something to put a ruler against is handy.

required hardware

For one depth stop you will need:

  • two M4x10 screws (longer will work, too)

  • two hexagonal M4 nuts

  • one thrust bearing

Screws with either cylindrical or button head will work, but note that they use different Allen keys (3.0 for cylindrical head, 2.5 for button head), so you may want to pick the one that's better suited for your workshop.

Thrust bearings required by the provided STLs are: 51100 (10x24x9mm) for drills 4mm to 8mm, 51101 (12x26x9mm) for 10mm.
