Small fidget toys that demonstrate some of the basic building blocks found throughout the Z1 computer.
Included are:
Relay
A universal switching element, the foundation of any binary computer. Whether an impulse from the front is transferred to the back depends on the state of the switch input from the side.
Memory
Used to store a single Bit of information. In this case only the writing mechanism is represented. (the method for reading is difficult to implement well at this scale and within a reasonable number of parts)
Register
Used to copy an input in one axis to an output on the other, and temporarily store the value.
All of these share the same "Pin" model, and keep in mind that some parts have to be printed twice for the Register.
The zip contains assembly overviews and guides for colouring in certain parts with a permanent marker such that the stored state (or input for the relay) is shown.
Once assembled, I'd recommend locking down the top plate with a tiny bit of superglue in each corner, just make sure everything can move smoothly beforehand and that you dont end up getting glue on the moving parts!
You can also play around with these mechanisms and even full machines like adders or memory banks in this simulator: https://tectato.itch.io/z1-simulator
A pretty QR code to this is also included, if you want to share these trinkets around you can print out the code at 1.5x1.5cm on a regular printer and glue them on the bottom of each.
