The legendary Cosmic Hot Cross Bun, said to be the source of all chocolate easter eggs. Once, every year, the Cosmic bun splits in half and rises open, revealing the infinite void within and spilling fourth its bounty of chocolate eggs upon the world.

The Cosmic Hot Cross Bun knows all... The Cosmic Hot Cross Bun is all...

This is a super fun project for the 2026 Easter competition, taking the idea of the humble hot cross bun to a hilariously holy level.

The inner trays and top cross are in printed in Protopasta Lapis Lazuli Glitter PLA - an incredible glitter filament that legitimately looks like the sparkling universe - and captures the idea of it being a portal to another dimension.

The bun top and bottom are printed in Protopasta Matte Fiber HTPLA - Daffodil Wood. I then dusted the top and bottom with Dulux Rust Effect spray paint to give it a 'baked' effect. The rust spray paint is the perfect colour, plus has silver dust in it that makes it look like sugar.

Fuzzy skin has also been applied around the bun to make look more real (applied in the complete layout file).

There are also several options for how to print/use the Cosmic Bun:

  1. The plain version features the two halves - a base and a lid - to act as a container.

  2. The hinged version features built-in hinges on each half, that can be connected with a length of filament pushed through.

  3. The floating version features a pole in the centre that holds the lid above. The pole can either be a standard paper straw (10mm dia.) or print the included model.

The top bun half is supplied in a couple formats:

  1. A complete, plain top half - requires supports to be printed on the inside.

  2. A plain split version - requires no supports at all, requires both halves to be pressed and glued together.

  3. A hinged split version.

All versions work with the base and inserts.

The approximate size of the full bun (without the base) is 120mm W x 120mm D x 95mm H.

This project has been completely designed, modelled and printed by a real human. Absolutely no AI was used.

Now, go fourth and spread the word of the Bun!
