Valkyrie

The Slavic symbol Valkyrie (often referred to as Valkirija) is an ancient protective symbol (obereg) that represents strength, honor, wisdom, and justice. It is closely associated with warriors, to whom it is believed to grant courage in battle and provide protection. Visually, it is a geometric, angular symbol, often composed of a swastika-like form within a square, surrounded by a solar circle.

Key meanings and characteristics:

• Protective symbol: It is believed to serve in the defense of one’s homeland, home, and family.

• Symbol of warriors: It promotes courage and bravery in battle.

• Spiritual dimension: It is said to aid in the “healing of the soul” and symbolizes wisdom that protects against misfortune.

• Dual meaning: In addition to protection in combat, it was also used as a safeguard against external negative forces.

• Connection to tradition: The name is sometimes interpreted as “guidance toward the heavenly paradise” (Irij) for fallen warriors.

• Connection to the sun: The symbol incorporates elements of the swastika (kolovrat) and represents the energy of nature and cosmic order.

Although the name resembles that of Norse mythology, in the context of Slavic neopaganism it refers to a distinct symbol. It is sometimes confused with other solar symbols, such as the Kolovrat.
