My model consists is a hand-powered, dimmable lampshade that runs by turning the knob, with turns a series of gears, ultimately turning each slat in sync. I built this because I really enjoy dimmable lights, and some of the time, lights are not dimmable. Thus, having this 3d print comes in handy and makes it a lot more fun to dim a light as well as providing a functional purpose. After printing, assembly is pretty simple:

  1. For each slat, there is a gear that clicks into place in the hexagonal hole. Make sure each gear is facing the correct direction, such that the little triangles on the bottom side are aligned. Once you have done this for all 15 slats, you can proceed to the next step.

  2. Now, insert each slat into the circular extrusions on the base of the lampshade, making sure that they are all cyclically symmetrical, and the gear is not on the base, but the gear side of the slat is on the upper side.

  3. Now insert the upper base into the three tall supports. The upper base is the circle defined by the 15 round things sticking out of it. It will fit into the tenons on the base.

  4. Next, with the slats all facing the same direction on their individual axis, put in the ring gear, meshing each gear and locating it into the extrusions on the upper base.

  5. Next push in the planet and sun gears, making sure that the sun gear is located in the centre.

  6. The upper shell can now be fitted on top. Thread it through the hole and lock it down in place with the supports. It should also lock into each gear centre bore.

  7. Attach the gear handle to the sun gear extension.

  8. Put the lampshade over a light of your choosing through the hole in the base.

  9. You're lamp is good to go! Try rotating the handle to up and close the slats.

To use it, simply place the lamp on top of a light that fits within the opening under the base. Rotate the knob in either direction to rotate the slats and brighten or dim the light. Make sure to not force the handle to rotate when you encounter resistance, or else it may break or the gear teeth may fall out of alignment.

How it works: When you turn the knob, a set of gears start turning. Turning the handle rotates a sun gear, which in turn turns 3 other planet gears. These 3 planet gears turn a ring gear around them, and the ring gear is double sided, with the outer teeth interacting with the slat gears. These gears all rotate in unison because they are all connected to the same gear.
