Plesiosaurus macrocephalus fossil from the Jurassic Period as seen at the Auckland War Memorial Museum in New Zealand.

A juvenile Plesiosaurus macrocephalus fossil replica to print, frame, and proudly display your dino-philic or Jurassic-philic nature. Or maybe you just want a copy of Nessie’s bones on your wall to go next to your stuffed bigfoot. I won’t judge.

I have included a .3MF file with the settings used to create the yellow/green on black version shown.

Creation of the model

1) Image taken of the original replica at the Auckland War Memorial Museum in New Zealand Feb 14, 2018
2) Adjust the image from 1) to reversed black and white with high contrast and a darkened background - also made slight skew adjustments to compensate for the angle that the picture was taken at
3) Used the image from 2) in 3DPRock's awesome lithophane generator: http://3dp.rocks/lithophane/
4) Used the generated STL from 3) in Meshmixer where the model was further pulled into a 3D shape that more accurately represented the original replica

Successfully printed on a Printrbot wood kit (shrunk down) and Bambu Carbon X1 in PLA - Rainbow color changing filament is a lot of fun for this type of model.

Printing on the Bambu (.3MF file)
  • I reduced the number of bottom solid layers down to just 2 because the only bottom layers are the bottom of the plate which, in theory isn't going to be seen nor needs to bridge over anything.

  • There is a filament change at layer 32 / 5.16 mm from the base.

  • I disabled the purge tower because I didn't care about color bleeding, it shouldn't show with this large of a print and the fact that the fossil doesn't have that distinct of a layer that it becomes fossil instead of background.
