Background

I wanted a hook to hold bibs on a highchair. I downloaded a model and it worked great for a while.

Then it started coming loose because the legs that I adhered it to were curved and the tape wasn't sticking. It doesn't look too dramatic which is why I thought I could get away with a flat surface model. My original intention was to design a model to match the compound curvature of the surface, but I remembered the lion's mane 3D print I've seen and thought I would try forming it. The results were better than I could have anticipated. The mounting is very secure, prints with no supports, and hardly uses any filament. I tried it out with a couple different surfaces, and even a stepped ledge would not have been any trouble as you can see in one of my other photos (I would have re-pressed it if I wanted to keep it there). If you mess up the forming, just heat it up and try again. I heated one up 3 times and didn't see any sort of degradation. I printed in both PLA and PETG. The PLA was a nicer print, but I wanted the more ductile properties of PETG.

Instructions

Just heat up the bottom for a few seconds using a heat gun or blow drier on low setting. It doesn't take long and be sure to keep the hot air moving back and forth to avoid melting or burning one area. The base will get really soft and you can then press it to the surface you want to mount. I didn't find that it was too hot to touch, but obviously be careful. After it cools for about 30 seconds the print becomes ridged again and you can apply the 3M Command Strip.
