Turing patterns are spontaneous, self-organized spots, stripes, or labyrinths that emerge in natural systems through the interaction of two diffusing chemical substances: a local activator and a long-range inhibitor. Proposed by Alan Turing in 1952, this reaction-diffusion mechanism explains how complex, orderly patterns arise from uniform states in biological morphogenesis, such as animal skin pigmentation, and in chemical reactions.
