This model is designed to keep mosquito dunks contained inside a catch basin so they don’t wash away during rain. Mosquito dunks are small, donut-shaped tablets that contain a naturally occurring bacterium that kills mosquito larvae in standing water without harming people, pets, fish, or plants.

Dunks float by design, which makes them great for treating standing water like ponds, buckets, or bird baths, but not so great for downspout basins where flowing water can carry them straight into the drain.
I originally tried tying dunks to rocks with string, but that solution didn’t hold up well. The dunks become brittle as they cycle between wet and dry, eventually breaking apart and slipping loose. It was also tedious to assemble and unreliable long-term. This holder solves that by physically containing the dunk (or pieces of it) while still allowing water to flow freely.
The design uses an open, spoke-style structure rather than a solid disk. This is intentional as flat shapes could rotate and potentially block the drain, increasing the risk of overflow.
It works with full dunks or partial pieces (such as quarters, which are often used to match water volume and extend supply). The model shown was tested with a full dunk for fit and validation, but it’s especially useful for holding smaller fragments.
Design notes:
Open spoke layout minimizes risk of clogging the drain.
Containment design prevents floating dunks from escaping.
Supports both whole and broken dunk pieces.
This is a simple, low-maintenance way to keep mosquito control working where it’s needed without worrying about your dunks disappearing after the next storm.
