Originally, I was planning on printing a similar smart phone holder from Thingiverse (https://www.thingiverse.com/thing:4982411), however, something looked subtly wrong about that design. Eventually, I decided to roll my own, learn about internal and external gears, and the try out the gear toolboxes in FreeCAD.
The result is this thing, which easily prints on its side and looks great (in my opinion). Although it could benefit from two complementing colors instead!
Admittedly, the design turned out a bit small, even for my relatively tiny Samsung Galaxy A40 as it is a bit unstable in portrait mode. That said, it works great in landscape mode, and, it should be relatively straightforward to scale up the model to fit any other device.
