The indicator on my my 1972 BMW 2002 didn't cancel. It appears that originally, there was a piece on the steering shaft that had a tab (dog?) that rotates with the steering shaft and would push over the throw that extends when the indicator is engaged, canceling the indicator and moving the stalk back into the neutral position.
If I am not mistaken that original part was 32321118825 (Steering Shaft Spring Retainer).
The original German part name is "Rückstellnocken" (reset cam), which is less confusing, IMO.
I designed and printed a piece that replicates this mechanism. It slips over the steering shaft and is friction-fit onto the shaft and then further compressed by the steering wheel itself.
on my 2002 the indicator stalk is on the right, so I positioned the part with the tab in the 9-o'clock position, which works fine.
I printed the final version in GF-Nylon, which seemed plenty rigid, even though I printed it with the layers parallel to the build plate. I used PLA for supports.
I created the gold-colored nut on the steering shaft in the picture as a means to rotate the steering to test the functionality.
