Lathe centering tool with 1/2in / 12mm shank to mount in a QCTP holder - AXA or larger.
This should go without saying: Print and use this tool at your own risk. If used incorrectly it can cause injury and/or damage to property. I am not responsible for any injury or damage resulting from the use/misuse of this tool.
Requires:
1x 629-zz bearing (9x26x8mm)
1x 9x25mm pin or shaft
CA glue or Loctite.
I had a difficult time finding a 9mm dowel pin, so turned a bit of brass to size on the lathe - a 12mm or 1/2in bolt could also be used to make a pin. Printed pins are not advised.
I printed in PETG, .15mm structural with 30% infill (recommend at least 20% infill).
It can be mounted in the tool holder with the flat side (bottom) down or up, but the centerline of the bearing should be reasonably close to the lathe axial centerline. Conceptually, the operation is similar to an edge-finder.
Use: Chuck the round stock snugly but not fully tight, so the stock can be "nudged" by the bearing. Line-up the bearing close to the (tailstock) end of the workpiece and manually rotate to assure the the bearing DOES NOT contact the workpiece yet. Start the lathe at a slow speed (less than 200 rpm) and slowly advance the cross slide until the runout is minimized / eliminated.
