VECTOR Cage (Vector Exposure Cage for Testing, Observation, and Research)
The VECTOR cage was developed to provide a standardized, field-adaptable exposure system for small hematophagous dipterans such as Culicidae and Culicoides. Traditional field cage and laboratory exposure methods often present limitations in airflow control, droplet distribution, and specimen accessibility, which can reduce consistency in bioassay results.
The VECTOR cage was designed to address these challenges by improving structural accessibility, environmental containment, and exposure uniformity during aerosol or droplet-based testing. Its cylindrical architecture and mesh composition allow for controlled exposure while maintaining sufficient airflow to simulate natural field conditions. The design also prioritizes ease of aspirator access, durability under high-temperature field environments, and compatibility with both laboratory and field-based experimental setups.
Printing notes:
No supports or rafts are required
Recommend printing in ASA or similar filament
Recommend using at minimum 3 wall layers at .2 layer height
If using No-see-um netting then 2 ribs and 2 bodies are required. If using stainless steel mesh then only 1 rib is required and bodies are not used.
For the Rib laying it on one of the sides that has a channel will eliminate the need for supports or rafts.
For the slicing the bodies a pause is required after the first layer to lay down the no-see-um netting. Using magnets is required to hold it taught against the build plate and first layer, then resume the print.
Assembly notes:
A standard canning glass jar lid is used to cap the cage
All of the parts are a tight friction fit, sanding may be required for easy assembly.
For permanent assembly, once all of the parts are fitted together squeeze a few drops of thin or medium viscosity CA glue into the 5 gluing points around the cage top and bottoms. The ribs do not require glue.
