Milling the insert

Cut the hexagon insert out of the 5mm aluminum that comes with the Z1.

REQUIRES the 1.5mm end mill for the pocket.

Make sure to file tabs flush, or else the insert won't slide into the handle.

Printing the handle

I recommended to add a height range modifier so that the area around the insert is stronger. I used 99 perimeters from layer height 69.5 up.

You may need to ream the hole with a 5mm drill bit.

Assembly

If you start by fully seating the bit or fully seating the insert, it will be difficult to align the bit and the insert. Try to understand these instructions before proceeding.

  1. Insert the bit partially into the handle. It should be loose enough to be removable.

  2. Put the insert onto the bit, and slide the insert over the "wings" portion of the bit.

  3. Rotate the insert so that it lines up with the pocket in the handle. The insert must turn the wings so they line up as well.

  4. Hold the handle and push the bit against a sturdy surface. Check that the insert is still aligned, and adjust as necessary.

  5. Fully seat the insert. A wrench can be used to apply pressure evenly.

Ideas for remixes

  • A more comfortable handle

  • An insert that can be milled with just the 3.175mm end mill

  • A ball detent system for use with the other bits.
