While looking for a solution to mount my Fritz!Box on OpenGrid, I found that the available models were either overengineered, too bulky, or not reliable enough. Therefore, I came up with the idea of using simple wood screws together with directional snap connectors featuring holes at precisely defined positions.

In the end there are 15 snaps with holes in different positions labeled from -7 to 7. By combining two different snaps, it is possible to create keyhole mounting pairs with distances starting at 14 mm up to infinity with an increment of 1 mm. For choosing the correct combination of snaps there is a spreadsheet with all the necessary information.

How to use:

  • Measure the distance d of the keyholes of the thing you want to mount on openGrid

  • In the spreadsheet, look up the measured distance d in the table on the right side (cols. S-U) and choose the appropriate number of grid cells  g (1)

  • Enter the value of g into cell D4 (2)

  • Next, locate the distance d among the green-highlighted cells in the table below. (3)

  • The row and column headers of the selected cell indicate the snap types required for the left and right sides

  • Print the selected snaps and fasten suitable screws (e.g., 3 × 12 mm wood screws) in the holes

  • Click the snaps into the openGrid and mount your device

The light snaps used here can be used in the standard grid without any problems.
