This 3D-printable flying ring combines classical aviation aerodynamics with modern fluid dynamics optimization to create a highly stable, long-distance flyer.
Key Design Features
Optimized NACA 23010 Airfoil: The ring utilizes a modified NACA 23010 airfoil profile. The low-camber setup naturally reduces pitching moments, while the 10% thickness-to-chord ratio provides the ideal balance between low drag and structural rigidity for high-velocity throws.
3D Print-Optimized Flat Bottom: To ensure flawless printability without the need for messy support structures, the lower surface of the airfoil has been flattened. This provides 100% bed contact during printing, resulting in an incredibly clean surface finish and crisp edges.
Integrated Upward Leading-Edge Gurney Flap: Positioned precisely on the upper surface of the outer perimeter (leading edge) is an integrated micro-Gurney flap (height tuned to roughly 1.5–2% of the chord).
At the front half of the ring: It acts as a miniature spoiler, generating a localized vortex that slightly reduces the excessive lift on the leading edge.
At the rear half of the ring: It helps catch the internal downwash, balancing out the front-to-back lift differential and keeping the ring perfectly level throughout its flight path.
