This is a real, working rotor cipher machine — the mechanical principle behind the WWII Enigma, distilled into two printed parts you can hold in one hand.

A classic Caesar cipher wheel has one fatal flaw: every A in your message encrypts to the same letter, so anyone can crack it by counting letter frequencies. The Enigma's answer was the stepping rotor: the alphabet mapping physically moves after every single keypress, so the message "HELLO" encrypts with five different alphabets. On this wheel, HELLO becomes QFZVN — notice the double L comes out as Z then V. Repeated letters leave no fingerprint. That one observation is the entire history of WWII codebreaking in miniature, and you can demonstrate it on your desk.

The rotor carries the authentic wiring sequence of Enigma Rotor I (EKMFLGDQVZNTOWYHXUSPAIBRCJ), the actual permutation used in German service machines.

How to use it

  1. Agree on a key with your partner — a single letter. This is the whole shared secret (a great excuse to hand out daily key sheets, just like the historical Tagesschlüssel).

  2. Set the key: click the rotor around until the red arrow points at the key letter on the outer ring.

  3. Encrypt: for each letter of your message, find it on the outer A–Z ring, read straight inward, and write down the inner letter. Then click the rotor one step clockwise — every letter, every time.

  4. Decrypt: your partner sets the same key, then reads the opposite direction (inner → outer), clicking identically.

⚠ WARNING: This device must never fall into enemy hands. If capture is unavoidable, remember your training: reset the rotor, eat the key sheet, deny everything. (Standard printer paper is non-toxic. We checked.)
