My modified version of the Poly Clone guitar with a whammy bar assembly and a tilt sensor for a fully operational guitar controller! 2 new Body1 versions and a whammy assembly to make that guitar 100% ready for some hard rocking!
Printing: no supports needed for any of the parts. 0.2mm or lower layers.
Choose between Body1 models depending on your microcontroller. "Body1 Pico" or "Body1 Whammy" for other microcontrollers.
Hardware:
2 pieces of M3x20 screws and M3 nuts (same as the rest of the guitar)
8 pieces M3x8 screws (for the whammy assembly)
WH148, 15mm 3-pin linear potentiometer (10k-100k Ohm, I use 10k)
M6 whammy bar (Long's Les Paul for material reference)
2 pieces SW-520D sensors for tilt
Spring 6mm (dia) x 25mm (len) is tight (you could use one that's a bit less wide like 4mm)
Optional: some hot glue for finishing up
Assembly
![]() | After printing every new part and getting the hardware ready. Assemble the guitar like in the original manual by Josh except we are using the new Body1. Then it's time add our last pieces. |
|---|
Whammy
![]() | First we'll take the potentiometer mount. Screw the potentiometer onto it after which it will be inserted into the whammy. (Remember to remove the tiny presupport from the whammy) |
|---|---|
![]() | ![]() |
![]() | Next we screw the screw mount on the other side of the whammy. Make sure it's not too tight, we want the whammy to move freely. |
|---|---|
![]() |
![]() | Then the whammy will be screwed into the cover. |
|---|---|
![]() |
![]() | Finally we screw the spring mount in place. |
|---|---|
![]() |
![]() | Now here comes the tricky part, the spring. You can do this however you want but this is how I do it. First I screw the spring into place onto the whammy and have the spring mount screw be halfway in. After which I'd route the spring onto the spring mount and tighten the screw onto the spring. |
|---|---|
![]() | ![]() |
![]() | Lastly the whammy bar gets screwed into place. |
|---|
![]() | Solder your wires that will go into the microcontroller and guide them inside the guitar after which the cover will be mounted. |
|---|
![]() | First add the nuts into the body and then screw everything into place. You can have the screws stick out to make aligning them easier. |
|---|---|
![]() |
![]() | And now after soldering our wires into the microcontroller the whammy is ready for use! You can use Santroller or some other program to calibrate the whammy. |
|---|
Tilt
![]() | So we'll be using the SW-520D sensors to make a easy to adjust tilt sensor for Starpower. |
|---|
![]() | First we need to solder the two switches together. |
|---|
![]() | Then we mount them onto the guitar and solder our data and ground wires which will be soldered onto our microcontroller. After which we will use Santroller to configure the tilt and find the sweet spot for the sensors. |
|---|
![]() | Lastly once we are pleased with the sensors position we'll dab some hot glue onto them to keep them in place while also making it possible to tweak the sensors later in the future. |
|---|
Congratulations you just upgraded to a fully operational Poly guitar!
Disclaimer!
Lastly I want to say I understand why Josh Designs hasn't published his own original files for a whammy like the ones he used for his Etsy store. I can respect wanting to have control over your models especially since you can find dozens of Poly guitars for sale online even though the model is for personal use only.
The reason I want to share this inferior design is simple, I spent a lot of time i making this and printing test parts etc. And I've seen how often people have asked for a whammy part to this guitar. I want to share my work so that maybe someone can have that Poly whammy like they've always wanted. But I'm sure Josh's whammy is better than mine, at least in pictures it looks that way.
