A fully functional model for showing the different parts of a hive to inspiring bee keepers!

Updated: Partially drawn comb frame added!

Update 2: Added a bee escape panel!

While small in size, all critical dimensions for bee space have been carefully preserved for full functionality.

Bee Escape Panel showing how to empty a box for honey harvesting. I included two options, a fully printable version, and a second version that would need screen glued to stapled to it. This second option is more representative of the real panels that you can build or buy, and while requiring a secondary step, visually shows the geometry of how the escape works.

Hive Parts Include:
  • Base with bee entrance holes, designed to be rodent proof

  • Four frame box with integrated handles

  • Queen/Brood excluder

  • Top cover

  • Bee Escape

Frame types include:
  • Standard open frame with wire holes, ready for wire and wax sheet.

  • Preembossed frame, sized for honey storage comb.

  • Queen cup frame for queen rearing, with a removable bar in two models: an empty bar (for attaching real wax cups) and integrated cups.

  • A partially drawn comb frame showing how bees start building on a new frame.

  • Realistic comb inserts at a 14 degree incline as the bees would build them to fit the preembossed frame (MMU printer ready, or print in parts).

Designed with classrooms in mind, the entire hive fits on a Prusa Mini at 180mm x 180mm. The parts are self aligning for easy opening and stacking during demonstrations.

Printing:

A basic assembly requires:
1x Base
2x Boxes
1x Excluder
1x Top
8x frames in any combination

Note: Most parts have an orientation to allow printing them without supports. The exception to this is the embossed frame without the comb. You can either print it flat with supports for the middle foundation later, or "upside down" with supports for the bottom of the frame. The base plate entrance holes may turn out better with supports, as well as the handles on the outside of the hive boxes, although both of these parts don't technically need it.

.STEP files included for easy remixing.

Areas that I would love to see remixed:

  • A modeled queen cell

  • A hair come cage that fits over the queen cell

  • An adjustable door cover

  • Embossed frame/comb inserts at the different size cells for different bee types.

  • Entrance runway addition.
