Device for Applying Markings on Ground, Grass, Asphalt, and Other Surfaces

The device is a mobile granular-material applicator that operates on the principle of gravity-fed dispensing through a grooved metering roller. As the wheels roll, they drive the internal roller, which picks up a measured portion of powder and releases it through the outlet slot, producing an intermittent yet highly visible line on the surface.

I use this system specifically for marking out tracks for radio‑controlled model training sessions and competitions.

Material Compatibility

The applicator works with any powdered material—chalk, gypsum (alabaster), cement, or flour, for example. The essential requirements are that the material be in powder form and completely dry to prevent clumping and clogging of the dispensing mechanism.

Wheel Options

Two types of drive wheels are available, selectable according to the surface:

Smooth wheel – For hard surfaces such as asphalt, I recommend fitting an old tire over it to increase traction.

Toothed (lugged) wheel – For soft ground or grass, print and use this wheel as‑is for optimal grip.

Dosing Control

The model includes two variants of the internal metering wheel, featuring 2 grooves or 3 grooves, which regulate the volume of material dispensed per revolution.

Printing Recommendations

For durability and reliable performance, use the following settings:

Wall count: 4–5

Infill density: 60%

Layer height: 0.2 mm

Top/bottom solid layers: at least 8 each

Internal metering wheel material: PETG or high‑strength PLA

Main housing material: PETG or ABS
